Lesson 4 · Arc length and sector area

Arcs and sectors

Arc =θ3602πr= \tfrac{\theta}{360} 2\pi r, sector =θ360πr2= \tfrac{\theta}{360}\pi r^2.

Watch out: circumference for arcs, area for sectors.

Lesson 5 · Circles: equation, center and radius

Circles

  • (x−h)2+(y−k)2=r2(x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2: center (h,k)(h, k), radius rr.
  • Expanded form: complete the square in xx and in yy.

Watch out: (x+3)(x + 3) means h=−3h = -3, and the right side is r2r^2.

Lesson 6 · Parabolas: focus and directrix

Parabolas

  • x2=4pyx^2 = 4py: focus (0,p)(0, p), directrix y=−py = -p.
  • y2=4pxy^2 = 4px: focus (p,0)(p, 0), directrix x=−px = -p.

Watch out: divide by 4 to get pp.

Lesson 7 · Partitioning a segment

Partitioning a segment

A+t(B−A)A + t(B - A); ratio m:nm : n gives t=mm+nt = \dfrac{m}{m + n}.

Watch out: count the parts of the ratio.
