Lesson 2 · What is a logarithm? Logarithms as exponents

Logarithms are exponents

  • log⁡bx=y\log_b x = y means by=xb^y = x.
  • log⁡x\log x means log⁡10x\log_{10} x.
  • The solution of bx=cb^x = c is x=log⁡bcx = \log_b c.

Watch out: log⁡bx\log_b x is never x÷bx \div b.

Lesson 3 · The number e and exponential functions with base e

The number ee

  • e≈2.718e \approx 2.718, the limit of (1+1x)x\left(1 + \frac{1}{x}\right)^x.
  • Continuous growth at rate rr: A(t)=A0 ertA(t) = A_0 \, e^{rt}.
  • In a ekta \, e^{kt}, the factor per unit of tt is eke^{k}.

Watch out: "continuously at rr" is not "by 1+r1 + r once a year".

Lesson 4 · Logarithmic functions and their graphs

Logarithmic functions

  • y=log⁡bxy = \log_b x is the inverse of y=bxy = b^x.
  • Through (1,0)(1, 0) and (b,1)(b, 1); domain x>0x > 0; asymptote x=0x = 0.
  • y=log⁡b(x−h)y = \log_b(x - h): asymptote x=hx = h; crosses the xx-axis at x=h+1x = h + 1.
Lesson 5 · Properties of logarithms: product, quotient and power rules

Properties of logarithms (M,N>0M, N > 0)

  • Product: log⁡b(MN)=log⁡bM+log⁡bN\log_b(MN) = \log_b M + \log_b N.
  • Quotient: log⁡bMN=log⁡bM−log⁡bN\log_b \frac{M}{N} = \log_b M - \log_b N.
  • Power: log⁡b(Mp)=plog⁡bM\log_b(M^p) = p \log_b M.

Watch out: there is no rule for log⁡b(M+N)\log_b(M + N).

Lesson 6 · Solve exponential equations in any base with logarithms

Solving a⋅bx=ca \cdot b^x = c

  1. Isolate the power: bx=cab^x = \dfrac{c}{a}.
  2. Take ln⁡\ln: xln⁡b=ln⁡cax \ln b = \ln \dfrac{c}{a}.
  3. Divide: x=ln⁡(c/a)ln⁡bx = \dfrac{\ln(c/a)}{\ln b}.

Watch out: never multiply aa into the base.

Lesson 7 · Exponential models: half-life and doubling time

Half-life and doubling time

  • Half-life hh: A0(12)thA_0 \left(\tfrac{1}{2}\right)^{\frac{t}{h}}. Doubling time dd: P0⋅2tdP_0 \cdot 2^{\frac{t}{d}}.
  • th\frac{t}{h} = number of half-lives.

Watch out: nn half-lives divide by 2n2^n, not by 2n2n.
