Lesson 2 · The binomial theorem

The binomial theorem

  • (a+b)n=∑(nk)a n−kb k(a + b)^n = \sum \dbinom{n}{k} a^{\,n-k} b^{\,k}.
  • Coefficients: a row of Pascal's triangle.
  • Include the powers of the constants.

Watch out: (a+b)2≠a2+b2(a + b)^2 \ne a^2 + b^2.

Lesson 4 · Power functions and end behavior

End behavior

  • Only the leading term (highest power) matters for large ∣x∣|x|.
  • Even degree: both ends the same way. Odd degree: opposite ways.
  • A negative leading coefficient flips the picture.

Watch out: the leading term is not always written first.

Lesson 5 · Zeros of polynomials and their multiplicity

Zeros and multiplicity

  • (x−r)(x - r) gives the zero rr; (x+q)(x + q) gives the zero −q-q.
  • Odd multiplicity: the graph crosses. Even: it touches and turns back.

Watch out: check the sign: x+3=0x + 3 = 0 means x=−3x = -3.

Lesson 6 · Dividing polynomials

Polynomial division

p=d⋅q+rp = d \cdot q + r; keep 0-coefficients for missing powers.

Watch out: check by multiplying back.

Lesson 7 · The remainder theorem and the factor theorem

Remainder and factor theorems

  • Remainder of p(x)÷(x−r)p(x) \div (x - r): p(r)p(r).
  • x−rx - r is a factor   ⟺  p(r)=0\iff p(r) = 0.
  • For x+rx + r, evaluate at −r-r.

Watch out: a factor needs a remainder of 00.

Lesson 8 · Find all the real zeros from one known zero

All zeros from one zero

  1. Check p(r)=0p(r) = 0.
  2. Divide by x−rx - r: p(x)=(x−r) q(x)p(x) = (x - r)\,q(x).
  3. Solve q(x)=0q(x) = 0; list rr with those solutions.

Watch out: x2=9x^2 = 9 gives 33 and −3-3.

Lesson 9 · Polynomial identities

Polynomial identities

a2−b2a^2 - b^2, a3±b3a^3 \pm b^3, and the geometric-sum identity.

Watch out: the sign pattern in the cube identities.

Lesson 10 · Complex zeros and conjugate pairs

Complex zeros

  • i2=−1i^2 = -1, so −k2=ki\sqrt{-k^2} = ki.
  • b2−4ac<0b^2 - 4ac < 0: no real zeros, two complex ones.
  • Real coefficients: p+qip + qi and p−qip - qi come together.

Watch out: the conjugate changes only the sign of the ii part.
