Arithmetic sequences

Introduction to exponential functions. exponential growth, exponential decay, growth factor, percent change, compound interest

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

A taxi charges 3 dollars, plus 2 dollars per mile. Mile by mile, the fare is 5,7,9,…5, 7, 9, \dots What does the 10th mile cost in total?

  1. 23 dollars
  2. 25 dollars

Key idea

An arithmetic sequence adds the same number dd (the common difference) each time.

an=a1+(n−1)da_n = a_1 + (n - 1)d. From apa_p to aqa_q there are q−pq - p steps, so d=aq−apq−pd = \dfrac{a_q - a_p}{q - p}.

Worked example

An arithmetic sequence has a3=11a_3 = 11 and a8=31a_8 = 31. Find dd and a20a_{20}.

d=31−115=4d = \dfrac{31 - 11}{5} = 4
5 steps from a₃ to a₈.
a1=11−2⋅4=3a_1 = 11 - 2 \cdot 4 = 3
Back 2 steps from a₃.
a20=3+19⋅4=79a_{20} = 3 + 19 \cdot 4 = 79
19 steps from a₁.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: a1=7a_1 = 7, d=5d = 5. Find a12a_{12}.

a12=7+11⋅5a_{12} = 7 + 11 \cdot 5
11 steps.
a12=62a_{12} = 62
7 + 55.

Practice ★

  1. An arithmetic sequence has a1=14a_1 = 14 and common difference 2. Find a43a_{ 43 }.
  2. An arithmetic sequence has a1=17a_1 = 17 and common difference 3. Find a24a_{ 24 }.
  3. An arithmetic sequence has a1=8a_1 = 8 and common difference 5. Find a26a_{ 26 }.
  4. An arithmetic sequence has a1=20a_1 = 20 and common difference 5. Find a28a_{ 28 }.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. In an arithmetic sequence, a4=28a_{ 4 } = 28 and a9=68a_{ 9 } = 68. Find the common difference.
  2. In an arithmetic sequence, a3=18a_{ 3 } = 18 and a7=34a_{ 7 } = 34. Find the common difference.
  3. In an arithmetic sequence, a3=11a_{ 3 } = 11 and a10=25a_{ 10 } = 25. Find the common difference.
  1. What kind of sequence is 3,6,12,24,…3, 6, 12, 24, \dots?
    1. Geometric, with ratio 2
    2. Arithmetic
    3. Neither

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

Summary card

Arithmetic sequences

  • Add dd each time: an=a1+(n−1)da_n = a_1 + (n - 1)d.
  • d=aq−apq−pd = \dfrac{a_q - a_p}{q - p}.

Watch out: n−1n - 1 steps from a1a_1 to ana_n.
