1. Solve linear equations in one variable

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

A pizza party costs 40 dollars plus 12 dollars per pizza, and the total is 100 dollars. Which equation fits?

  1. 40+12p=10040 + 12p = 100
  2. 12+40p=10012 + 40p = 100

Key idea

Equivalent equations have the same solutions.

To solve a linear equation, make equivalent equations: add or subtract the same amount on both sides, multiply or divide both sides by the same non-zero number, distribute, collect like terms. Stop when xx is alone.

Worked example

Solve 5x+3=2x+155x + 3 = 2x + 15.

3x+3=153x + 3 = 15
Subtract 2x.
3x=123x = 12
Subtract 3.
x=4x = 4
Divide by 3.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: 3(x+2)=213(x + 2) = 21. Find xx.

x=5x = 5
Divide by 3: x + 2 = 7.

  3. Solve 4x+4=324x + 4 = 32. x=  ?x = \;?

Summary card

Linear equations

Do the same to both sides until xx is alone.

Watch out: distribute to every term.

2. Solve a formula for a variable

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

A rectangle has perimeter P=2ℓ+2wP = 2\ell + 2w. You know PP and ℓ\ell. Which formula gives ww directly?

  1. w=P−2ℓ2w = \dfrac{P - 2\ell}{2}
  2. w=P−2ℓ2w = P - \dfrac{2\ell}{2}

Key idea

Solve for a letter as you solve for xx.

To solve for a variable, treat the other letters as numbers: use the same moves as for a number equation until that variable is alone. Divide every term on the other side.

Worked example

Solve 3x+2y=123x + 2y = 12 for yy.

2y=12−3x2y = 12 - 3x
Subtract 3x.
y=12−3x2y = \dfrac{12 - 3x}{2}
Divide both terms by 2.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: y=4x+8y = 4x + 8. Solve for xx.

x=y−84x = \dfrac{y - 8}{4}
Subtract 8, divide by 4.

3. Linear equations in two variables and their graphs

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

Is (2,4)(2, 4) a solution of 3x+y=103x + y = 10?

  1. Yes
  2. No

Key idea

A linear equation in two variables is a line.

The solutions of Ax+By=CAx + By = C are the points of a line. Set y=0y = 0 for the xx-intercept and x=0x = 0 for the yy-intercept. Solving for yy gives y=mx+by = mx + b, with slope m=−ABm = -\tfrac{A}{B}.

Worked example

2x+5y=202x + 5y = 20.

xx-intercept 1010
y = 0.
yy-intercept 44
x = 0.
Slope −25-\tfrac{2}{5}
y = −(2/5)x + 4.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: the yy-intercept of 3x+4y=243x + 4y = 24.

66
x = 0: 4y = 24.

Practice ★

  2. The point (1,y)(1, y) is a solution of 5x+y=175x + y = 17. Find yy.
  1. Find the xx-intercept of 3x+6y=543x + 6y = 54 (the value of xx where the line crosses the xx-axis).

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. What is the slope of the line 8x+9y=178x + 9y = 17?
  2. What is the slope of the line 1x+4y=41x + 4y = 4?

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. Find the xx-intercept of 3x+6y=543x + 6y = 54 (the value of xx where the line crosses the xx-axis).
  2. Find the xx-intercept of 3x+1y=33x + 1y = 3 (the value of xx where the line crosses the xx-axis).
  3. Find the xx-intercept of 4x+1y=124x + 1y = 12 (the value of xx where the line crosses the xx-axis).

Summary card

Lines from equations

Intercepts: set the other variable to 0. Slope: solve for yy.

Watch out: slope of Ax+By=CAx + By = C is −A/B-A/B.

4. Solve systems of linear equations by substitution

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

y=2xy = 2x and x+y=9x + y = 9. Since yy is 2x2x, you can replace it. What is xx?

  1. 33
  2. 66

Key idea

Substitution turns two equations into one.

A solution of a system makes both equations true: it is where the lines cross. Substitution: solve one equation for a variable, put that expression into the other equation, solve, then substitute back to get the other variable.

Worked example

y=3x−1y = 3x - 1 and 2x+y=142x + y = 14.

2x+3x−1=142x + 3x - 1 = 14
Replace y.
x=3x = 3
5x = 15.
y=8y = 8
Back into y = 3x − 1.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: y=x+4y = x + 4 and x+y=10x + y = 10. Find xx.

x=3x = 3
2x + 4 = 10.

  2. Solve the system x=5yx = 5y and x+y=24x + y = 24. y=  ?y = \;?

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. Solve the system y=2x+4y = 2x + 4 and 3x+y=243x + y = 24. x=  ?x = \;?
  2. Solve the system y=5x+5y = 5x + 5 and 3x+y=373x + y = 37. x=  ?x = \;?
  3. Solve the system y=5x+7y = 5x + 7 and 3x+y=393x + y = 39. x=  ?x = \;?

Summary card

Substitution

Replace one variable by its expression, solve, then substitute back.

Watch out: answer the variable the question asks for.

5. Solve systems of linear equations by elimination

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

x+y=10x + y = 10 and x−y=4x - y = 4. Add the two equations. What happens?

  1. yy disappears: 2x=142x = 14
  2. xx disappears

Key idea

Elimination: add or subtract whole equations.

Adding or subtracting equations keeps the solution of the system. Elimination: make one variable's coefficients equal (multiply an equation if needed), then subtract (or add if they are opposite) so that variable disappears.

Worked example

2x+5y=192x + 5y = 19 and 2x+y=112x + y = 11.

4y=84y = 8
Subtract: 2x cancels.
y=2y = 2
Divide.
x=4.5x = 4.5
2x + 2 = 11.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: x+y=12x + y = 12 and x−y=2x - y = 2. Find xx.

  1. Solve the system 3x+4y=303x + 4y = 30 and 3x+2y=183x + 2y = 18. y=  ?y = \;?

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. To solve x+7y=20x + 7y = 20 and 9x+y=209x + y = 20 by elimination, you multiply the first equation by a number and subtract the second, so that xx disappears. Which number?
  2. To solve x+5y=20x + 5y = 20 and 9x+y=279x + y = 27 by elimination, you multiply the first equation by a number and subtract the second, so that xx disappears. Which number?
  1. Boss problem. A school play sold 33 tickets: adult tickets at 9 dollars and child tickets at 7 dollars, for 287 dollars in all. Let xx be the number of adult tickets and yy the number of child tickets.

Exit ticket

  3. Solve the system x+y=8x + y = 8 and x−y=−6x - y = -6. x=  ?x = \;?

Summary card

Elimination

Equal coefficients: subtract. Opposite coefficients: add.

Watch out: multiply first when no coefficients match.

6. Systems with one, no or infinitely many solutions

Discover

y=2x+1y = 2x + 1 and y=2x+5y = 2x + 5. Can both be true at once?

  1. No, never
  2. Yes, always

Key idea

Two lines meet once, never, or everywhere.

Write both equations as y=mx+by = mx + b. Different slopes: one solution. Same slope, different intercepts: parallel lines, no solution. Same slope and intercept: the same line, infinitely many solutions.

Worked example

y=3x−2y = 3x - 2 and 6x−2y=46x - 2y = 4.

y=3x−2y = 3x - 2
Solve the second for y.
Infinitely many solutions

7. Solve linear inequalities in one variable

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

−2x>6-2x > 6. Try x=−4x = -4: −2⋅(−4)=8>6-2 \cdot (-4) = 8 > 6. So which describes all solutions?

  1. x<−3x < -3
  2. x>−3x > -3

Key idea

Solve inequalities like equations, with one extra rule.

Adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing by a positive number keeps the inequality. Multiplying or dividing by a negative number flips it. Strict signs (<<, >>) exclude the endpoint; ≤\le, ≥\ge include it.

Worked example

Solve −3x+4≤13-3x + 4 \le 13.

−3x≤9-3x \le 9
Subtract 4.
x≥−3x \ge -3
Divide by −3: flip.
[−3,∞)[-3, \infty)
Endpoint included.

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

Which numbers are at a distance of 3 from 0 on the number line?

  1. 3 and −3
  2. Only 3

Key idea

Absolute value is distance.

∣x−a∣|x - a| is the distance between xx and aa. So ∣x−a∣=b|x - a| = b (with b>0b > 0) has two solutions, a−ba - b and a+ba + b; ∣x−a∣<b|x - a| < b is the interval a−b<x<a+ba - b < x < a + b; ∣x−a∣>b|x - a| > b is the two outer pieces x<a−bx < a - b or x>a+bx > a + b. If b<0b < 0, ∣x−a∣=b|x - a| = b has no solution.

Worked example

Solve ∣x−2∣=5|x - 2| = 5 and ∣x−2∣≤5|x - 2| \le 5.

x−2=5x - 2 = 5 or x−2=−5x - 2 = -5: x=7x = 7 or x=−3x = -3
Two cases.
−3≤x≤7-3 \le x \le 7

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

Is the point (0,0)(0, 0) a solution of y>2x+3y > 2x + 3?

  1. No
  2. Yes

Key idea

An inequality in two variables is a half-plane.

Graph y<mx+by < mx + b or y>mx+by > mx + b with a dashed boundary line, and ≤\le or ≥\ge with a solid line. Shade above for y>y > and below for y<y < (or test a point). The solutions of a system of inequalities are where the shadings overlap.

Worked example

y≥−x+4y \ge -x + 4.

≥ includes the line.
Shade the side without the origin: above
