Lesson 1 · Exponential growth and decay: multiplying by a constant factor

Exponential change: the same factor at every step

  • Start aa, factor bb per step: after nn steps, a⋅bna \cdot b^n.
  • Gain p%p\%: factor 1+p1001 + \frac{p}{100}. Lose p%p\%: factor 1−p1001 - \frac{p}{100}.

Watch out: adding the same amount each step is linear, not exponential.

Lesson 3 · Rational exponents in exponential functions

Rational exponents

  • b1n=bnb^{\frac{1}{n}} = \sqrt[n]{b}; bmn=(bn)mb^{\frac{m}{n}} = \left(\sqrt[n]{b}\right)^m.
  • b−r=1brb^{-r} = \dfrac{1}{b^{r}}: the value stays positive.
  • A factor bb per unit means a factor b12b^{\frac12} per half-unit.
Lesson 4 · Write an exponential function from a description or two points

Writing an exponential function

  • f(x)=a⋅bxf(x) = a \cdot b^x: a=f(0)a = f(0), b=f(1)f(0)b = \dfrac{f(1)}{f(0)}.
  • Multiplied by bb every nn units: f(x)=a⋅bxnf(x) = a \cdot b^{\frac{x}{n}}.

Watch out: the starting value is f(0)f(0), and it goes in front, not in the base.

Lesson 5 · What is a logarithm? Logarithms as exponents

Logarithms are exponents

  • log⁡bx=y\log_b x = y means by=xb^y = x.
  • log⁡x\log x means log⁡10x\log_{10} x.
  • The solution of bx=cb^x = c is x=log⁡bcx = \log_b c.

Watch out: log⁡bx\log_b x is never x÷bx \div b.

Lesson 6 · The number e and exponential functions with base e

The number ee

  • e≈2.718e \approx 2.718, the limit of (1+1x)x\left(1 + \frac{1}{x}\right)^x.
  • Continuous growth at rate rr: A(t)=A0 ertA(t) = A_0 \, e^{rt}.
  • In a ekta \, e^{kt}, the factor per unit of tt is eke^{k}.

Watch out: "continuously at rr" is not "by 1+r1 + r once a year".

Lesson 7 · Solve equations of the form e^(kx) = a

Solving ekx=ae^{kx} = a (with a>0a > 0)

  1. Take ln⁡\ln of both sides: kx=ln⁡akx = \ln a.
  2. Divide by kk: x=ln⁡akx = \dfrac{\ln a}{k}.

Watch out: ee is not a factor. Never divide by ee.

Lesson 8 · Logarithmic functions and their graphs

Logarithmic functions

  • y=log⁡bxy = \log_b x is the inverse of y=bxy = b^x.
  • Through (1,0)(1, 0) and (b,1)(b, 1); domain x>0x > 0; asymptote x=0x = 0.
  • y=log⁡b(x−h)y = \log_b(x - h): asymptote x=hx = h; crosses the xx-axis at x=h+1x = h + 1.
