Properties of logarithms: product, quotient and power rules
Logarithms. log rules, change of base, logarithmic equations, half-life
Warm-up
Three quick questions from earlier lessons.
Discover
Use the fact that log2x is the exponent of 2. Compare log24+log28 with log232.
Why are they equal? Hint: 4⋅8=32, and 22⋅23=22+3.
Key idea
Logarithms turn multiplication into addition, because exponents add when powers multiply.
logb(MN)=logbM+logbN;
logbNM=logbM−logbN;
logb(Mp)=plogbM These hold for M>0 and N>0.
Worked example
Evaluate log64+log69 without a calculator.
=log6(4⋅9) Product rule.
Why is the first line true?
- The log of a product is the sum of the logs
- You can add inside the logarithm
- The logs multiply
=log636 4 · 9 = 36.
Your turn, guided
Your turn: evaluate 2log36−log34. Fill in the missing line.
=log336−log34 Power rule: 2 log₃ 6 = log₃ 36.
Quotient rule: 36 ÷ 4 = 9.
