The squeeze theorem and the limit of sin x / x

Limits and continuity. limits, continuity, squeeze theorem, sin x over x, intermediate value theorem, IVT, one-sided limits

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

With xx in radians: sin⁡0.10.1≈0.9983\dfrac{\sin 0.1}{0.1} \approx 0.9983, sin⁡0.010.01≈0.99998\dfrac{\sin 0.01}{0.01} \approx 0.99998. What does sin⁡xx\dfrac{\sin x}{x} approach as x→0x \to 0?

  1. 1
  2. 0

Key idea

Two tools for limits that algebra cannot simplify.

lim⁡u→0sin⁡uu=1\displaystyle\lim_{u \to 0} \dfrac{\sin u}{u} = 1 (uu in radians), so sin⁡(ax)x→a\dfrac{\sin(ax)}{x} \to a. Squeeze theorem: if g(x)≤f(x)≤h(x)g(x) \le f(x) \le h(x) near aa and gg and hh have the same limit LL at aa, then lim⁡x→af(x)=L\displaystyle\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = L.

Worked example

Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(5x)x\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(5x)}{x}.

sin⁡(5x)x=5⋅sin⁡(5x)5x\dfrac{\sin(5x)}{x} = 5 \cdot \dfrac{\sin(5x)}{5x}
Make the denominator match the angle 5x.
→5⋅1\to 5 \cdot 1
u = 5x → 0, and sin(u)/u → 1.
=5= 5
The limit.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: lim⁡x→0sin⁡(3x)2x\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(3x)}{2x}.

=32⋅sin⁡(3x)3x= \dfrac{3}{2} \cdot \dfrac{\sin(3x)}{3x}
Write it with sin(3x)/(3x).
→32\to \dfrac{3}{2}
The ratio tends to 1.

Practice ★

  1. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(6x)x\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(6x)}{x}.
  2. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(2x)x\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(2x)}{x}.
  3. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(9x)x\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(9x)}{x}.
  4. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(7x)x\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(7x)}{x}.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(3x)sin⁡(9x)\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(3x)}{\sin(9x)}.
  2. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(8x)sin⁡(9x)\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(8x)}{\sin(9x)}.
  3. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(4x)sin⁡(8x)\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(4x)}{\sin(8x)}.
  1. What is lim⁡x→0x2sin⁡(1x)\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} x^{ 2 }\sin\left(\dfrac{1}{x}\right)?
    1. 0, by the squeeze theorem
    2. It does not exist, because sin⁡(1/x)\sin(1/x) oscillates
    3. 1

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(6x)x\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(6x)}{x}.
  2. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(2x)x\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(2x)}{x}.
  3. Find lim⁡x→0sin⁡(9x)x\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin(9x)}{x}.

Summary card

Special limits

  • sin⁡uu→1\dfrac{\sin u}{u} \to 1 as u→0u \to 0 (radians); so sin⁡(ax)x→a\dfrac{\sin(ax)}{x} \to a.
  • Squeeze: trapped between two functions with the same limit.

Watch out: sin⁡(ax)x\dfrac{\sin(ax)}{x} tends to aa, not 1.
