Warm-up
Three quick questions from earlier lessons.
Discover
A ball moving left has velocity m/s; its acceleration is m/s². Is it getting faster or slower?
- Faster
- Slower, since the acceleration is negative
Key idea
For a particle on a line with position :
, . At rest: . It changes direction where changes sign. Speeding up when and have the same sign, slowing down when opposite. Total distance adds the distances of each leg between turns.
Worked example
on . Find the total distance.
It turns at
v = 2t − 4 = 0.
Legs: and
s(0) = 0, s(2) = −4, s(5) = 5.
Total distance m
Add the legs. (The displacement is only 5.)
Your turn, guided
Your turn: . When is it at rest?
v(t) = 2t − 6 = 0.
Practice ★
- A particle's position is . At what time is it at rest?
- A particle's position is . At what time is it at rest?
- At , a particle has velocity m/s and acceleration m/s². Is it speeding up or slowing down?
- Speeding up: velocity and acceleration have the same sign
- Slowing down, because the acceleration is negative
- Neither: its speed stays the same
Watch out!
Practice ★★
- A particle's position is meters. Find the total distance it travels from to .

Three questions to check you have got it.

- A particle's position is . At what time is it at rest?
- A particle's position is . At what time is it at rest?
Summary card
Motion on a line
- , ; at rest when .
- Same signs of and : speeding up.
- Distance: add each leg between turns.
Watch out: displacement and distance differ when the particle turns back.
