The quotient rule

Differentiation rules.

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

x3x=x2\dfrac{x^3}{x} = x^2, whose derivative is 2x2x. The quotient of the derivatives would be 3x21\dfrac{3x^2}{1}. Do they agree?

  1. No
  2. Yes

Key idea

Top's derivative first, then subtract.

Quotient rule: (fg)′=f′ g−f g′g2\left(\dfrac{f}{g}\right)' = \dfrac{f'\,g - f\,g'}{g^2}, where g≠0g \ne 0.

Worked example

h(x)=x2x+1h(x) = \dfrac{x^2}{x + 1}. Find h′(x)h'(x).

f′=2xf' = 2x, g′=1g' = 1
f = x², g = x + 1.
h′(x)=2x(x+1)−x2(x+1)2h'(x) = \dfrac{2x(x + 1) - x^2}{(x + 1)^2}
f'g − fg' over g².
h′(x)=x2+2x(x+1)2h'(x) = \dfrac{x^2 + 2x}{(x + 1)^2}
Simplify the top.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: h(x)=exxh(x) = \dfrac{e^x}{x}.

h′(x)=xex−exx2h'(x) = \dfrac{xe^x - e^x}{x^2}
f = eˣ, g = x: f'g − fg' = xeˣ − eˣ.

Practice ★

  1. f(x)=xx+6f(x) = \dfrac{x}{x + 6}. Find f′(x)f'(x).
  2. f(x)=xx+3f(x) = \dfrac{x}{x + 3}. Find f′(x)f'(x).
  3. f(x)=xx+2f(x) = \dfrac{x}{x + 2}. Find f′(x)f'(x).

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. f(x)=4sin⁡xxf(x) = \dfrac{ 4\sin x}{x}. Find f′(x)f'(x).
  2. f(x)=1sin⁡xxf(x) = \dfrac{ 1\sin x}{x}. Find f′(x)f'(x).
  1. f(1)=1f(1) = 1, f′(1)=−2f'(1) = -2, g(1)=4g(1) = 4 and g′(1)=2g'(1) = 2. Find (fg)′(1)\left(\dfrac{f}{g}\right)'(1).
  2. f(1)=1f(1) = 1, f′(1)=1f'(1) = 1, g(1)=1g(1) = 1 and g′(1)=4g'(1) = 4. Find (fg)′(1)\left(\dfrac{f}{g}\right)'(1).

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. f(x)=xx+6f(x) = \dfrac{x}{x + 6}. Find f′(x)f'(x).
  2. f(x)=xx+3f(x) = \dfrac{x}{x + 3}. Find f′(x)f'(x).
  3. f(x)=xx+2f(x) = \dfrac{x}{x + 2}. Find f′(x)f'(x).

Summary card

Quotient rule

(fg)′=f′g−fg′g2\left(\dfrac{f}{g}\right)' = \dfrac{f'g - fg'}{g^2}: "low d-high minus high d-low, over low squared".

Watch out: the order in the numerator matters.
