Antiderivatives

Integrals and accumulation.

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

Which function has derivative 3x23x^2?

  1. x3x^3
  2. 6x6x

Key idea

Run the derivative rules backwards. Antiderivatives differ by a constant CC.

∫xn dx=xn+1n+1+C\displaystyle\int x^n\,dx = \dfrac{x^{n+1}}{n + 1} + C (n≠−1n \ne -1); ∫1x dx=ln⁡∣x∣+C\displaystyle\int \dfrac{1}{x}\,dx = \ln|x| + C; ∫ex dx=ex+C\displaystyle\int e^x\,dx = e^x + C; ∫cos⁡x dx=sin⁡x+C\displaystyle\int \cos x\,dx = \sin x + C; ∫sin⁡x dx=−cos⁡x+C\displaystyle\int \sin x\,dx = -\cos x + C. A given value such as F(0)F(0) fixes CC.

Worked example

Find FF with F′(x)=4x3+sin⁡xF'(x) = 4x^3 + \sin x and F(0)=2F(0) = 2.

F(x)=x4−cos⁡x+CF(x) = x^4 - \cos x + C
Term by term.
C=3C = 3
F(0) = 0 − 1 + C = 2.
F(x)=x4−cos⁡x+3F(x) = x^4 - \cos x + 3
Check by differentiating.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: F′(x)=6x2F'(x) = 6x^2, F(0)=0F(0) = 0.

F(x)=2x3F(x) = 2x^3
6x³/3.

Practice ★

  1. Find the antiderivative FF of f(x)=4x3+9f(x) = 4x^{ 3 } + 9 with F(0)=0F(0) = 0.
  2. Find the antiderivative FF of f(x)=2x2+8f(x) = 2x^{ 2 } + 8 with F(0)=0F(0) = 0.
  3. Find the antiderivative FF of f(x)=5x4+6f(x) = 5x^{ 4 } + 6 with F(0)=0F(0) = 0.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

Summary card

Antiderivatives

  • xn→xn+1n+1x^n \to \dfrac{x^{n+1}}{n+1}; 1x→ln⁡∣x∣\tfrac{1}{x} \to \ln|x|; ex→exe^x \to e^x; cos⁡→sin⁡\cos \to \sin; sin⁡→−cos⁡\sin \to -\cos.
  • Use a given value to find CC.
