Second derivatives of parametric curves

Parametric equations, polar coordinates and vector-valued functions.

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

For x=t2x = t^2, y=t3y = t^3 (t>0t > 0), dydx=3t2\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{3t}{2}. Is d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} just ddt(3t2)=32\dfrac{d}{dt}\left(\dfrac{3t}{2}\right) = \dfrac{3}{2}?

  1. No, it must be divided by dxdt\tfrac{dx}{dt}
  2. Yes

Key idea

Differentiate the slope with respect to tt, then convert to xx.

d2ydx2=ddt(dydx)dxdt\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} = \dfrac{\dfrac{d}{dt}\left(\dfrac{dy}{dx}\right)}{\dfrac{dx}{dt}}. Its sign gives the concavity of the path.

Worked example

x=t2x = t^2, y=t3−3ty = t^3 - 3t, t>0t > 0.

dydx=3t2−32t=32t−32t\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{3t^2 - 3}{2t} = \tfrac{3}{2}t - \tfrac{3}{2t}
First derivative.
32+32t2\tfrac{3}{2} + \tfrac{3}{2t^2}
d/dt of it.
d2ydx2=34t+34t3>0\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} = \dfrac{3}{4t} + \dfrac{3}{4t^3} > 0: concave up
Divide by 2t.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: x=tx = t, y=t3y = t^3. (Here x=tx = t, so it is the ordinary second derivative.)

d2ydx2=6t\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} = 6t
d/dt(3t²) ÷ 1.

Practice ★

  1. x=t2x = t^2, y=8t3y = 8t^3 for t>0t > 0. Find d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} in terms of tt.
  2. x=t2x = t^2, y=1t3y = 1t^3 for t>0t > 0. Find d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} in terms of tt.
  1. x=t2x = t^2, y=9t3y = 9t^3. Find d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} at t=3t = 3.
  2. x=t2x = t^2, y=7t3y = 7t^3. Find d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} at t=3t = 3.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. x=etx = e^t, y=e−3ty = e^{-3t}. Find d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} in terms of tt.
  2. x=etx = e^t, y=e−4ty = e^{-4t}. Find d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} in terms of tt.

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. x=t2x = t^2, y=8t3y = 8t^3 for t>0t > 0. Find d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} in terms of tt.
  2. x=t2x = t^2, y=1t3y = 1t^3 for t>0t > 0. Find d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} in terms of tt.
  3. x=t2x = t^2, y=5t3y = 5t^3 for t>0t > 0. Find d2ydx2\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} in terms of tt.

Summary card

Second derivative

d2ydx2=ddt ⁣(dydx)/dxdt\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} = \dfrac{d}{dt}\!\left(\dfrac{dy}{dx}\right) \Big/ \dfrac{dx}{dt}.

Watch out: the division by dx/dtdx/dt is needed again.
