Slopes of polar curves

Parametric equations, polar coordinates and vector-valued functions.

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

On the circle r=2r = 2, drdθ=0\dfrac{dr}{d\theta} = 0 everywhere. Does that make every tangent horizontal?

  1. No
  2. Yes

Key idea

Turn the polar curve into a parametric one, with θ\theta as the parameter.

x=rcos⁡θx = r\cos\theta, y=rsin⁡θy = r\sin\theta, so dydx=r′sin⁡θ+rcos⁡θr′cos⁡θ−rsin⁡θ\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{r'\sin\theta + r\cos\theta}{r'\cos\theta - r\sin\theta}, where r′=drdθr' = \dfrac{dr}{d\theta}.

Worked example

r=1+sin⁡θr = 1 + \sin\theta at θ=0\theta = 0.

r=1r = 1, r′=1r' = 1
r = 1, r′ = cos 0 = 1.
dydx=11\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{1}{1}
Top: 1·0 + 1·1; bottom: 1·1 − 1·0.
=1= 1
The slope.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: r=3r = 3 at θ=π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2} (top of the circle).

slope 00
r′ = 0: (0 + 3·0)/(0 − 3·1).

Practice ★

  1. Find the slope dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} of the polar curve r=8+cos⁡θr = 8 + \cos\theta at θ=π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2}.
  2. Find the slope dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} of the polar curve r=5+cos⁡θr = 5 + \cos\theta at θ=π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2}.
  1. Where does the polar curve r=f(θ)r = f(\theta), for instance r=1+sin⁡θr = 1 + \sin\theta, have a horizontal tangent?
    1. Where dydθ=0\dfrac{dy}{d\theta} = 0 and dxdθ≠0\dfrac{dx}{d\theta} \ne 0
    2. Where drdθ=0\dfrac{dr}{d\theta} = 0
    3. Where dxdθ=0\dfrac{dx}{d\theta} = 0

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. Find the slope of the spiral r=4θr = 4\theta at θ=π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2}.
  2. Find the slope of the spiral r=8θr = 8\theta at θ=π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2}.

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. Find the slope dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} of the polar curve r=8+cos⁡θr = 8 + \cos\theta at θ=π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2}.
  2. Find the slope dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} of the polar curve r=5+cos⁡θr = 5 + \cos\theta at θ=π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2}.
  3. Find the slope dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} of the polar curve r=2+cos⁡θr = 2 + \cos\theta at θ=π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2}.

Summary card

Polar slopes

dydx=r′sin⁡θ+rcos⁡θr′cos⁡θ−rsin⁡θ\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{r'\sin\theta + r\cos\theta}{r'\cos\theta - r\sin\theta}.

Watch out: dr/dθdr/d\theta is not the slope.
