1. Integration by parts

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

The product rule says (xex)′=ex+xex(x e^x)' = e^x + x e^x. Integrate both sides: xex=∫ex dx+∫xex dxx e^x = \displaystyle\int e^x\,dx + \int x e^x\,dx. So what is ∫xex dx\displaystyle\int x e^x\,dx?

  1. xex−ex+Cx e^x - e^x + C
  2. x22ex+C\dfrac{x^2}{2}e^x + C

Key idea

Trade one integral for an easier one.

Integration by parts: ∫u dv=uv−∫v du\displaystyle\int u\,dv = uv - \int v\,du. For definite integrals: ∫abu dv=[uv]ab−∫abv du\displaystyle\int_a^b u\,dv = \big[uv\big]_a^b - \int_a^b v\,du. Choose uu so that dudu is simpler.

Worked example

∫xsin⁡x dx\displaystyle\int x\sin x\,dx.

u=xu = x, du=dxdu = dx, v=−cos⁡xv = -\cos x
u = x simplifies; dv = sin x dx is easy to integrate.
−xcos⁡x+∫cos⁡x dx-x\cos x + \displaystyle\int \cos x\,dx
uv − ∫v du.
−xcos⁡x+sin⁡x+C-x\cos x + \sin x + C
Finish.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: ∫xe2x dx\displaystyle\int x e^{2x}\,dx, u=xu = x, v=12e2xv = \tfrac{1}{2}e^{2x}.

12xe2x−14e2x+C\tfrac{1}{2}xe^{2x} - \tfrac{1}{4}e^{2x} + C
½xe^{2x} − ∫½e^{2x} dx.

Summary card

Integration by parts

∫u dv=uv−∫v du\displaystyle\int u\,dv = uv - \int v\,du.

2. Integration by parts: choosing u, repeated parts

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

For ∫xln⁡x dx\displaystyle\int x\ln x\,dx you could take u=xu = x or u=ln⁡xu = \ln x. With u=xu = x you need v=∫ln⁡x dxv = \displaystyle\int \ln x\,dx first. Which choice is easier?

  1. u=ln⁡xu = \ln x
  2. u=xu = x

Key idea

Let uu be the factor that simplifies when differentiated.

Good uu choices, in order: Logarithms, Inverse trig, Algebraic (powers of xx), Trig, Exponentials (LIATE). With xnx^n times exe^x or sin⁡x\sin x, apply parts nn times.

Worked example

∫x2ex dx\displaystyle\int x^2 e^x\,dx.

x2ex−∫2xex dxx^2 e^x - \displaystyle\int 2x e^x\,dx
u = x², v = eˣ.
x2ex−(2xex−2ex)x^2 e^x - (2xe^x - 2e^x)
Parts again on ∫2xeˣ: 2xeˣ − 2eˣ.
(x2−2x+2)ex+C(x^2 - 2x + 2)e^x + C
Tidy.

Your turn, guided

Summary card

Choosing uu

  • LIATE: logs, inverse trig, powers, trig, exponentials.

Watch out: if the new integral is harder, swap uu and dvdv.

3. Partial fractions

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

1x−1−1x+1\dfrac{1}{x - 1} - \dfrac{1}{x + 1} over a common denominator gives 2x2−1\dfrac{2}{x^2 - 1}. So how can you integrate 1x2−1\dfrac{1}{x^2 - 1}?

  1. Split it as 12(1x−1−1x+1)\tfrac{1}{2}\left(\tfrac{1}{x - 1} - \tfrac{1}{x + 1}\right)
  2. Use arctan⁡x\arctan x

Key idea

Split a rational function into simple fractions, then integrate each to a logarithm.

Partial fractions: if (x−r)(x−s)(x - r)(x - s) with r≠sr \ne s, then p(x)(x−r)(x−s)=Ax−r+Bx−s\dfrac{p(x)}{(x - r)(x - s)} = \dfrac{A}{x - r} + \dfrac{B}{x - s} (degree of pp less than 2). Find AA by multiplying by x−rx - r and setting x=rx = r; likewise BB.

Worked example

∫5(x−2)(x+3) dx\displaystyle\int \dfrac{5}{(x - 2)(x + 3)}\,dx.

A=1A = 1, B=−1B = -1
x = 2: A = 5/5; x = −3: B = 5/(−5).
ln⁡∣x−2∣−ln⁡∣x+3∣+C\ln|x - 2| - \ln|x + 3| + C
Integrate each.
ln⁡∣x−2x+3∣+C\ln\left|\dfrac{x - 2}{x + 3}\right| + C
One log.

Your turn, guided

x = 1: 3/(1 + 2).

Practice ★

  1. 8(x−4)(x−6)=Ax−4+Bx−6\dfrac{ 8 }{(x - 4)(x - 6)} = \dfrac{A}{x - 4} + \dfrac{B}{x - 6}. Find AA.

  3. 8(x−1)(x−5)=Ax−1+Bx−5\dfrac{ 8 }{(x - 1)(x - 5)} = \dfrac{A}{x - 1} + \dfrac{B}{x - 5}. Find AA.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. Evaluate ∫12dxx(x+3)\displaystyle\int_1^2 \dfrac{dx}{x(x + 3)}.
  2. Evaluate ∫12dxx(x+4)\displaystyle\int_1^2 \dfrac{dx}{x(x + 4)}.
  1. Evaluate ∫56dxx2−1\displaystyle\int_{ 5 }^{ 6 } \dfrac{dx}{x^2 - 1}.

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. 8(x−4)(x−6)=Ax−4+Bx−6\dfrac{ 8 }{(x - 4)(x - 6)} = \dfrac{A}{x - 4} + \dfrac{B}{x - 6}. Find AA.
