Discover
A kite string 30 m long makes a 40∘ angle with the ground. Which ratio gives the kite's height?
kite30 mh40°
sin40∘=30height
cos40∘=30height
Key idea
Pick the ratio that links what you know with what you want.
Label the sides from the given angle, choose sin, cos or tan, write the equation, then solve: if the unknown is on top, multiply; if it is in the denominator, divide. Use degree mode.

30×0.643
sin 40° ≈ 0.643.
height ≈19.28 m

8. The law of cosines
Warm-up
Three quick questions from earlier lessons.
Discover
If the angle between sides 3 and 4 is 90°, the third side is 5. If the angle is bigger than 90°, the third side is…
Longer than 5
Still 5
CBAa = 5b = 8760°
√(5² + 8²) ≈ 9.43. Set C above 90°. How long is c?
Longer than 9.43
Still 9.43
Key idea
The law of cosines corrects the Pythagorean theorem.
In any triangle, c2=a2+b2−2abcosC, where C is the angle opposite c. Use it with two sides and the angle between them (to find the third side) or three sides (to find an angle: cosC=2aba2+b2−c2). For C=90° it is the Pythagorean theorem; for an obtuse C, cosC<0 and c gets longer.
Worked example
a = 5, b = 8, C = 60°.
CBAa = 5b = 8c = 760°
c2=25+64−2⋅5⋅8⋅21
Formula.
c2=49, c=7
