Expressions with exponents; order of operations

Expressions and equations. equations, solving equations, distributive property, exponents, order of operations

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

What is 343^4?

  1. 81
  2. 12

Key idea

Exponents mean repeated multiplication; they come first.

bnb^n means nn factors of bb: b⋅b⋯bb \cdot b \cdots b. Order of operations: parentheses, then exponents, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. In 3x23x^2 only xx is squared.

Worked example

Evaluate 2+3⋅422 + 3 \cdot 4^2.

42=164^2 = 16
Exponent first.
3⋅16=483 \cdot 16 = 48
Multiply.
5050
Add.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: 5x25x^2 when x=3x = 3.

4545
5 · 9.

Practice ★

  1. What is the value of 646^{ 4 }?
  2. What is the value of 626^{ 2 }?
  1. Evaluate 1+2⋅321 + 2 \cdot 3^2.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. Evaluate 4x24x^2 when x=8x = 8.
  2. Evaluate 4x24x^2 when x=4x = 4.
  1. Boss problem. A square garden has side 10 m. A path 1 m wide goes all around it, making a bigger square.

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. Evaluate 1+2⋅321 + 2 \cdot 3^2.
  2. Evaluate 5+5⋅225 + 5 \cdot 2^2.
  3. Evaluate 1+3⋅221 + 3 \cdot 2^2.
