One-step equations

Expressions and equations. equations, solving equations, distributive property, exponents, order of operations

Discover

A balance has xx and 4 weights on one side and 11 weights on the other. What is xx?

  1. 7
  2. 15

Key idea

Undo the operation on both sides.

An equation stays true if you do the same to both sides. Undo adding by subtracting, subtracting by adding, multiplying by dividing, dividing by multiplying.

Worked example

5x=355x = 35 and x−8=12x - 8 = 12.

x=7x = 7
Divide by 5.
x=20x = 20
Add 8.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: x+9=23x + 9 = 23.

1414
23 − 9.

Practice ★

  1. Solve x+10=37x + 10 = 37. x=  ?x = \;?
  2. Solve x+23=35x + 23 = 35. x=  ?x = \;?
  1. Solve 11x=7711x = 77. x=  ?x = \;?

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. Solve x3=7\dfrac{x}{ 3 } = 7. x=  ?x = \;?
  2. Solve x3=6\dfrac{x}{ 3 } = 6. x=  ?x = \;?

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. Solve x+10=37x + 10 = 37. x=  ?x = \;?
  2. Solve x+23=35x + 23 = 35. x=  ?x = \;?
  3. Solve x+27=59x + 27 = 59. x=  ?x = \;?
