Lesson 1 · What is a logarithm? Logarithms as exponents

Logarithms are exponents

  • log⁡bx=y\log_b x = y means by=xb^y = x.
  • log⁡x\log x means log⁡10x\log_{10} x.
  • The solution of bx=cb^x = c is x=log⁡bcx = \log_b c.

Watch out: log⁡bx\log_b x is never x÷bx \div b.

Lesson 3 · Exponential models: half-life and doubling time

Half-life and doubling time

  • Half-life hh: A0(12)thA_0 \left(\tfrac{1}{2}\right)^{\frac{t}{h}}. Doubling time dd: P0⋅2tdP_0 \cdot 2^{\frac{t}{d}}.
  • th\frac{t}{h} = number of half-lives.

Watch out: nn half-lives divide by 2n2^n, not by 2n2n.

Lesson 4 · Properties of logarithms: product, quotient and power rules

Properties of logarithms (M,N>0M, N > 0)

  • Product: log⁡b(MN)=log⁡bM+log⁡bN\log_b(MN) = \log_b M + \log_b N.
  • Quotient: log⁡bMN=log⁡bM−log⁡bN\log_b \frac{M}{N} = \log_b M - \log_b N.
  • Power: log⁡b(Mp)=plog⁡bM\log_b(M^p) = p \log_b M.

Watch out: there is no rule for log⁡b(M+N)\log_b(M + N).

Lesson 5 · Change of base for logarithms

Change of base

log⁡ac=ln⁡cln⁡a\log_a c = \dfrac{\ln c}{\ln a}: the base goes below.

Check: log⁡25\log_2 5 must be between 2 and 3, because 22=42^2 = 4 and 23=82^3 = 8.

Lesson 6 · Solve equations of the form e^(kx) = a

Solving ekx=ae^{kx} = a (with a>0a > 0)

  1. Take ln⁡\ln of both sides: kx=ln⁡akx = \ln a.
  2. Divide by kk: x=ln⁡akx = \dfrac{\ln a}{k}.

Watch out: ee is not a factor. Never divide by ee.

Lesson 7 · Solve exponential equations in any base with logarithms

Solving a⋅bx=ca \cdot b^x = c

  1. Isolate the power: bx=cab^x = \dfrac{c}{a}.
  2. Take ln⁡\ln: xln⁡b=ln⁡cax \ln b = \ln \dfrac{c}{a}.
  3. Divide: x=ln⁡(c/a)ln⁡bx = \dfrac{\ln(c/a)}{\ln b}.

Watch out: never multiply aa into the base.
