Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

A lighthouse beam points at 90∘90^\circ (straight north) and a boat is 3 km away along it. In rectangular coordinates, where is the boat?

  1. (0,3)(0, 3)
  2. (3,0)(3, 0)

Key idea

Polar coordinates (r,θ)(r, \theta) give a point by its distance rr from the origin and its angle θ\theta from the positive xx-axis.

x=rcos⁡θx = r\cos\theta, y=rsin⁡θy = r\sin\theta. Back: r=x2+y2r = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2} and tan⁡θ=yx\tan\theta = \dfrac{y}{x}, with θ\theta in the quadrant of the point.

Worked example

Convert (3,−1)(\sqrt{3}, -1) to polar coordinates.

r=3+1=2r = \sqrt{3 + 1} = 2
Distance from the origin.
θ=2π−π6=11π6\theta = 2\pi - \dfrac{\pi}{6} = \dfrac{11\pi}{6}
tan θ = −1/√3; the point is right and down: quadrant IV.
(2,11π6)\left(2, \dfrac{11\pi}{6}\right)
Both coordinates.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: convert (4,π3)\left(4, \dfrac{\pi}{3}\right) to rectangular.

x=2x = 2
4 cos(π/3) = 4 · 1/2.
y=23y = 2\sqrt{3}
4 sin(π/3) = 4 · √3/2.

Practice ★

  1. Convert the polar point (7,π6)\left(7, \frac{\pi}{6}\right) to rectangular coordinates (exact).
  2. Convert the polar point (8,5π3)\left(8, \frac{5 \pi}{3}\right) to rectangular coordinates (exact).
  3. Convert the polar point (7,2π3)\left(7, \frac{2 \pi}{3}\right) to rectangular coordinates (exact).

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. Convert the point (−2,2)(-2, 2) to polar coordinates (r,θ)(r, \theta) with r>0r > 0 and 0≤θ<2π0 \le \theta < 2\pi.
  2. Convert the point (−5,5)(-5, 5) to polar coordinates (r,θ)(r, \theta) with r>0r > 0 and 0≤θ<2π0 \le \theta < 2\pi.
  1. Tap the point with polar coordinates (4,3π2)\left(4, \frac{3 \pi}{2}\right).
  2. Tap the point with polar coordinates (3,π)\left(3, \pi\right).

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

Summary card

Polar coordinates

  • x=rcos⁡θx = r\cos\theta, y=rsin⁡θy = r\sin\theta.
  • r=x2+y2r = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2}, tan⁡θ=yx\tan\theta = \dfrac{y}{x}.

Watch out: choose θ\theta in the quadrant of the point.
