Sequences: explicit and recursive formulas

Sequences and series. sequences, series, arithmetic sequence, geometric sequence, sigma notation, geometric series, binomial theorem, Pascal's triangle

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

A sequence starts 5,8,11,14,…5, 8, 11, 14, \dots Which rule gives the next term from the one before?

  1. Add 3
  2. Multiply by 3

Key idea

A sequence is a function whose inputs are the whole numbers 1,2,3,…1, 2, 3, \dots: ana_n is its nnth term.

An explicit formula gives ana_n from nn directly (for example an=3n+2a_n = 3n + 2). A recursive formula gives a first term and a rule from one term to the next (for example a1=5a_1 = 5, an+1=an+3a_{n+1} = a_n + 3).

Worked example

a1=2a_1 = 2 and an+1=3an−1a_{n+1} = 3a_n - 1. Find a4a_4.

a2=3⋅2−1=5a_2 = 3 \cdot 2 - 1 = 5
Apply the rule to a₁.
a3=3⋅5−1=14a_3 = 3 \cdot 5 - 1 = 14
Then to a₂.
a4=3⋅14−1=41a_4 = 3 \cdot 14 - 1 = 41
Then to a₃.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: an=n2−1a_n = n^2 - 1. Find a5a_5.

a5=52−1a_5 = 5^2 - 1
Replace n by 5.
a5=24a_5 = 24
25 − 1.

Practice ★

  1. an=n2+5a_n = n^2 + 5. Complete the table.
  2. an=n2+9a_n = n^2 + 9. Complete the table.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. a1=3a_1 = 3 and an+1=2an−7a_{n+1} = 2a_n - 7. Find a3a_3.
  2. a1=6a_1 = 6 and an+1=2an−3a_{n+1} = 2a_n - 3. Find a3a_3.
  3. a1=4a_1 = 4 and an+1=2an−6a_{n+1} = 2a_n - 6. Find a3a_3.
  1. Write a formula for ana_n, starting at n=1n = 1: 1,6,11,16,…1,6, 11, 16, \dots
  2. Write a formula for ana_n, starting at n=1n = 1: 3,10,17,24,…3,10, 17, 24, \dots
  3. Write a formula for ana_n, starting at n=1n = 1: 8,14,20,26,…8,14, 20, 26, \dots

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

Summary card

Sequences

  • Explicit: ana_n straight from nn.
  • Recursive: a first term and a rule from ana_n to an+1a_{n+1}.

Watch out: check your formula with n=1n = 1.
