The binomial theorem

Sequences and series. sequences, series, arithmetic sequence, geometric sequence, sigma notation, geometric series, binomial theorem, Pascal's triangle

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

(1+x)2=1+2x+x2(1 + x)^2 = 1 + 2x + x^2 and (1+x)3=1+3x+3x2+x3(1 + x)^3 = 1 + 3x + 3x^2 + x^3. The coefficients 1,3,3,11, 3, 3, 1 are a row of Pascal's triangle. What is the next row?

  1. 1,4,6,4,11, 4, 6, 4, 1
  2. 1,4,4,4,11, 4, 4, 4, 1

Key idea

The binomial theorem expands any power of a sum.

(a+b)n=∑k=0n(nk)a n−kb k(a + b)^n = \displaystyle\sum_{k=0}^{n} \binom{n}{k} a^{\,n-k} b^{\,k}, with (nk)=n!k! (n−k)!\dbinom{n}{k} = \dfrac{n!}{k!\,(n - k)!}. For example (n1)=n\dbinom{n}{1} = n and (n2)=n(n−1)2\dbinom{n}{2} = \dfrac{n(n - 1)}{2}.

Worked example

Find the coefficient of x2x^2 in (x+3)5(x + 3)^5.

Term: (53)x2⋅33\dbinom{5}{3} x^2 \cdot 3^3
x² means b = 3 appears 3 times: k = 3 with b = 3.
10⋅27=27010 \cdot 27 = 270
C(5, 3) = 10.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: the coefficient of x2x^2 in (1+x)6(1 + x)^6.

(62)=6⋅52\dbinom{6}{2} = \dfrac{6 \cdot 5}{2}
C(6, 2).
=15= 15
30 ÷ 2.

Practice ★

  1. Find the coefficient of x2x^2 in (1+x)10(1 + x)^{ 10 }.
  2. Find the coefficient of x2x^2 in (1+x)7(1 + x)^{ 7 }.
  3. Find the coefficient of x2x^2 in (1+x)5(1 + x)^{ 5 }.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. Find the coefficient of xx in (x+4)4(x + 4)^{ 4 }.
  2. Find the coefficient of xx in (x+3)5(x + 3)^{ 5 }.
  3. Find the coefficient of xx in (x+5)4(x + 5)^{ 4 }.
  1. In (2x+2)2=4x2+kx+4(2x + 2)^2 = 4x^2 + kx + 4, what is kk?
  2. In (7x+2)2=49x2+kx+4(7x + 2)^2 = 49x^2 + kx + 4, what is kk?

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. Find the coefficient of xx in (x+4)4(x + 4)^{ 4 }.
  2. Find the coefficient of xx in (x+3)5(x + 3)^{ 5 }.
  3. Find the coefficient of xx in (x+5)4(x + 5)^{ 4 }.

Summary card

The binomial theorem

  • (a+b)n=∑(nk)a n−kb k(a + b)^n = \sum \dbinom{n}{k} a^{\,n-k} b^{\,k}.
  • Coefficients: a row of Pascal's triangle.
  • Include the powers of the constants.

Watch out: (a+b)2≠a2+b2(a + b)^2 \ne a^2 + b^2.
