Sum and difference identities

Trigonometric identities and equations. trig identities, trig equations, Pythagorean identity, double angle, sum and difference formulas, solve trig equations

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

Is cos⁡(30∘+60∘)\cos(30^\circ + 60^\circ) equal to cos⁡30∘+cos⁡60∘\cos 30^\circ + \cos 60^\circ?

  1. No
  2. Yes

Key idea

The sum and difference identities give exact values for angles like 75∘75^\circ or 15∘15^\circ.

sin⁡(A±B)=sin⁡Acos⁡B±cos⁡Asin⁡B\sin(A \pm B) = \sin A\cos B \pm \cos A\sin B. cos⁡(A±B)=cos⁡Acos⁡B∓sin⁡Asin⁡B\cos(A \pm B) = \cos A\cos B \mp \sin A\sin B (the sign flips for cosine).

Worked example

Find the exact value of sin⁡75∘\sin 75^\circ.

sin⁡75∘=sin⁡45∘cos⁡30∘+cos⁡45∘sin⁡30∘\sin 75^\circ = \sin 45^\circ\cos 30^\circ + \cos 45^\circ\sin 30^\circ
75° = 45° + 30°.
=22⋅32+22⋅12= \dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\cdot\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{2} + \dfrac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\cdot\dfrac{1}{2}
Special values.
=6+24= \dfrac{\sqrt{6} + \sqrt{2}}{4}
Common denominator.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: cos⁡15∘=cos⁡(45∘−30∘)\cos 15^\circ = \cos(45^\circ - 30^\circ).

=cos⁡45∘cos⁡30∘+sin⁡45∘sin⁡30∘= \cos 45^\circ\cos 30^\circ + \sin 45^\circ\sin 30^\circ
For a difference, cosine takes a plus.
=6+24= \dfrac{\sqrt{6} + \sqrt{2}}{4}
√6/4 + √2/4.

Practice ★

  1. Use a sum identity to find the exact value of cos⁡(45∘+30∘)\cos(45^\circ + 30^\circ).
  2. Use a sum identity to find the exact value of cos⁡(60∘+30∘)\cos(60^\circ + 30^\circ).
  3. Use a sum identity to find the exact value of cos⁡(60∘+45∘)\cos(60^\circ + 45^\circ).

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. Which expression is equal to cos⁡(A−B)\cos(A - B)?
    1. cos⁡Acos⁡B+sin⁡Asin⁡B\cos A\cos B + \sin A\sin B
    2. cos⁡Acos⁡B−sin⁡Asin⁡B\cos A\cos B - \sin A\sin B
    3. cos⁡A−cos⁡B\cos A - \cos B
  1. AA and BB are in quadrant I, sin⁡A=35\sin A = \frac{3}{5} and cos⁡B=513\cos B = \dfrac{5}{13}. Find the exact value of sin⁡(A+B)\sin(A + B).
  2. AA and BB are in quadrant I, sin⁡A=725\sin A = \frac{7}{25} and cos⁡B=513\cos B = \dfrac{5}{13}. Find the exact value of sin⁡(A+B)\sin(A + B).

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

Summary card

Sum and difference identities

  • sin⁡(A±B)=sin⁡Acos⁡B±cos⁡Asin⁡B\sin(A \pm B) = \sin A\cos B \pm \cos A\sin B.
  • cos⁡(A±B)=cos⁡Acos⁡B∓sin⁡Asin⁡B\cos(A \pm B) = \cos A\cos B \mp \sin A\sin B.

Watch out: cos⁡(A+B)≠cos⁡A+cos⁡B\cos(A + B) \ne \cos A + \cos B; cosine flips the sign.
