Add, subtract and scale vectors
Vectors. vectors, components, magnitude, direction angle, unit vector, dot product, resultant, velocity
Warm-up
Three quick questions from earlier lessons.
Discover
You walk ⟨3,1⟩, then ⟨1,2⟩. Where are you, compared with your start?
- ⟨4,3⟩
- ⟨2,−1⟩
Key idea
Vectors combine component by component.
⟨a,b⟩+⟨c,d⟩=⟨a+c, b+d⟩;
⟨a,b⟩−⟨c,d⟩=⟨a−c, b−d⟩;
k⟨a,b⟩=⟨ka, kb⟩. Geometrically,
u+v goes tip to tail. In general
∣u+v∣=∣u∣+∣v∣.
Worked example
u=⟨2,−1⟩ and v=⟨−3,4⟩. Find 3u+v.
3u=⟨6,−3⟩ Scale u.
3u+v=⟨6−3, −3+4⟩=⟨3,1⟩ Add component by component.
Your turn, guided
Your turn: u=⟨4,1⟩, v=⟨1,−2⟩. Find u−2v.
Horizontal:
4−2=22v = ⟨2, −4⟩.
Vertical:
5, so
u−2v=⟨2,5⟩1 − (−4).
Practice ★
- u=⟨4,6⟩ and v=⟨1,−4⟩. Find 4u−v.
- u=⟨3,1⟩ and v=⟨4,−6⟩. Find 4u−v.
- u=⟨5,2⟩ and v=⟨3,−5⟩. Find 2u−v.
Watch out!
Practice ★★
- u=⟨4,1⟩ and v=⟨5,6⟩. Find the exact value of ∣u+v∣.
- u=⟨5,5⟩ and v=⟨5,3⟩. Find the exact value of ∣u+v∣.
- u=⟨1,4⟩ and v=⟨2,2⟩. Find the exact value of ∣u+v∣.
- u=⟨2,3⟩ and v=⟨−3,1⟩, both starting at the origin. Tap the end point of u+v.
- u=⟨4,1⟩ and v=⟨−2,2⟩, both starting at the origin. Tap the end point of u+v.
Exit ticket
Three questions to check you have got it.
- u=⟨4,1⟩ and v=⟨5,6⟩. Find the exact value of ∣u+v∣.
- u=⟨5,5⟩ and v=⟨5,3⟩. Find the exact value of ∣u+v∣.
- u=⟨1,4⟩ and v=⟨2,2⟩. Find the exact value of ∣u+v∣.
Summary card
Vector operations
- Add, subtract, scale: component by component.
- u+v: tip to tail.
- ∣u+v∣: add first, then take the length.
Watch out: ∣u+v∣=∣u∣+∣v∣ unless they point the same way.
