The definite integral and its properties

Integrals and accumulation.

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

∫02(−3) dx\displaystyle\int_0^2 (-3)\,dx: the graph y=−3y = -3 lies below the axis. What is the integral?

  1. −6-6
  2. 66

Key idea

The definite integral is the limit of Riemann sums: a signed area.

∫abf(x) dx=lim⁡n→∞∑f(xi∗)Δx\displaystyle\int_a^b f(x)\,dx = \lim_{n \to \infty} \sum f(x_i^*)\Delta x. Properties: ∫baf=−∫abf\displaystyle\int_b^a f = -\int_a^b f; ∫acf=∫abf+∫bcf\displaystyle\int_a^c f = \int_a^b f + \int_b^c f; ∫ab(kf+g)=k∫abf+∫abg\displaystyle\int_a^b (kf + g) = k\int_a^b f + \int_a^b g; ∫abc dx=c(b−a)\displaystyle\int_a^b c\,dx = c(b - a).

Worked example

∫04f=5\displaystyle\int_0^4 f = 5 and ∫46f=−2\displaystyle\int_4^6 f = -2. Find ∫06(2f(x)−1) dx\displaystyle\int_0^6 \big(2f(x) - 1\big)\,dx.

∫06f=5+(−2)=3\displaystyle\int_0^6 f = 5 + (-2) = 3
Join the intervals.
2⋅3−1⋅62 \cdot 3 - 1 \cdot 6
Linearity; the constant −1 over a length of 6.
=0= 0
Compute.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: with the same ff, find ∫60f(x) dx\displaystyle\int_6^0 f(x)\,dx.

−3-3
Reverse the limits: change the sign.

Practice ★

  1. ∫13f(x) dx=7\displaystyle\int_1^3 f(x)\,dx = 7 and ∫37f(x) dx=−4\displaystyle\int_3^7 f(x)\,dx = -4. Find ∫71f(x) dx\displaystyle\int_7^1 f(x)\,dx.
  2. ∫13f(x) dx=−7\displaystyle\int_1^3 f(x)\,dx = -7 and ∫37f(x) dx=8\displaystyle\int_3^7 f(x)\,dx = 8. Find ∫71f(x) dx\displaystyle\int_7^1 f(x)\,dx.
  1. Use geometry: find ∫−6636−x2 dx\displaystyle\int_{-6}^{ 6 } \sqrt{ 36 - x^2}\,dx.
  2. Use geometry: find ∫−111−x2 dx\displaystyle\int_{-1}^{ 1 } \sqrt{ 1 - x^2}\,dx.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. ∫04f(x) dx=3\displaystyle\int_0^{ 4 } f(x)\,dx = 3. Find ∫04(3f(x)+2) dx\displaystyle\int_0^{ 4 } \big(3f(x) + 2\big)\,dx.
  2. ∫09f(x) dx=4\displaystyle\int_0^{ 9 } f(x)\,dx = 4. Find ∫09(3f(x)+2) dx\displaystyle\int_0^{ 9 } \big(3f(x) + 2\big)\,dx.

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. ∫13f(x) dx=7\displaystyle\int_1^3 f(x)\,dx = 7 and ∫37f(x) dx=−4\displaystyle\int_3^7 f(x)\,dx = -4. Find ∫71f(x) dx\displaystyle\int_7^1 f(x)\,dx.
  2. ∫13f(x) dx=−7\displaystyle\int_1^3 f(x)\,dx = -7 and ∫37f(x) dx=8\displaystyle\int_3^7 f(x)\,dx = 8. Find ∫71f(x) dx\displaystyle\int_7^1 f(x)\,dx.
  3. ∫13f(x) dx=5\displaystyle\int_1^3 f(x)\,dx = 5 and ∫37f(x) dx=7\displaystyle\int_3^7 f(x)\,dx = 7. Find ∫71f(x) dx\displaystyle\int_7^1 f(x)\,dx.

Summary card

The definite integral

  • Signed area: below the axis is negative.
  • Reverse the limits: change the sign. Adjacent intervals add.
  • ∫abc dx=c(b−a)\displaystyle\int_a^b c\,dx = c(b - a).

Watch out: a constant is integrated over the whole length.
