Derivatives of parametric curves

Parametric equations, polar coordinates and vector-valued functions.

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

A point moves with x=t2x = t^2, y=t3y = t^3. At t=1t = 1, xx grows at 2 units per second and yy at 3 units per second. What is the slope of its path there?

  1. 32\tfrac{3}{2}
  2. 23\tfrac{2}{3}

Key idea

Divide the rates.

For x=x(t)x = x(t), y=y(t)y = y(t): dydx=dy/dtdx/dt\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{dy/dt}{dx/dt} where dxdt≠0\dfrac{dx}{dt} \ne 0. Horizontal tangent: dydt=0\dfrac{dy}{dt} = 0, dxdt≠0\dfrac{dx}{dt} \ne 0. Vertical tangent: dxdt=0\dfrac{dx}{dt} = 0, dydt≠0\dfrac{dy}{dt} \ne 0.

Worked example

x=t2+1x = t^2 + 1, y=t3−3ty = t^3 - 3t. Slope at t=2t = 2.

dxdt=2t\dfrac{dx}{dt} = 2t, dydt=3t2−3\dfrac{dy}{dt} = 3t^2 - 3
Differentiate each.
dydx=3t2−32t\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{3t^2 - 3}{2t}
Divide.
=94= \dfrac{9}{4}
t = 2.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: same curve, where is the tangent horizontal (t>0t > 0)?

t=1t = 1
3t² − 3 = 0, and dx/dt = 2 ≠ 0 there.

Practice ★

  1. x=t2x = t^2, y=t3+9ty = t^3 + 9t. Find dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} at t=3t = 3.
  2. x=t2x = t^2, y=t3+4ty = t^3 + 4t. Find dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} at t=1t = 1.
  3. x=t2x = t^2, y=t3+6ty = t^3 + 6t. Find dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} at t=3t = 3.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. x=3cos⁡tx = 3\cos t, y=3sin⁡ty = 3\sin t. Find dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} at t=π3t = \dfrac{\pi}{ 3 }. Give an exact value.
  2. x=8cos⁡tx = 8\cos t, y=8sin⁡ty = 8\sin t. Find dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} at t=π6t = \dfrac{\pi}{ 6 }. Give an exact value.
  1. x=t2x = t^2, y=t3−27ty = t^3 - 27t. For which t>0t > 0 is the tangent horizontal?
  1. Boss problem. x=t2+1x = t^2 + 1, y=2t3y = 2t^3. Study the curve at t=1t = 1, the point (2,2)(2, 2).

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. x=t2x = t^2, y=t3+9ty = t^3 + 9t. Find dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} at t=3t = 3.
  2. x=t2x = t^2, y=t3+4ty = t^3 + 4t. Find dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} at t=1t = 1.
  3. x=t2x = t^2, y=t3+6ty = t^3 + 6t. Find dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} at t=3t = 3.

Summary card

Parametric slopes

  • dydx=dy/dtdx/dt\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{dy/dt}{dx/dt}.
  • Horizontal: y′=0y' = 0. Vertical: x′=0x' = 0.

Watch out: yy's rate on top.
