Exponent rules

Multiply: add. Divide: subtract. Power of a power: multiply.

Watch out: count the factors when in doubt.

Zero and negative exponents

$a^0 = 1$ ; $a^{-n} = 1/a^n$ .

Watch out: negative exponent, small positive number.

Scientific notation

$a \times 10^n$ with $1 \le a < 10$ .

Watch out: count the places the point moves, not the digits.

Computing in scientific notation

Multiply/divide: separately. Add/subtract: same power first.

Watch out: adding does not add the exponents.
