Eliminate the parameter

Parametric equations and polar coordinates. parametric equations, eliminate the parameter, polar coordinates, polar equations, polar form, De Moivre, modulus, argument

Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

x=t+2x = t + 2 and y=t2y = t^2. Which equation links xx and yy directly?

  1. y=(x−2)2y = (x - 2)^2
  2. y=x2y = x^2

Key idea

Removing tt shows the shape of the curve.

To eliminate the parameter: solve one equation for tt, then substitute into the other. For x=rcos⁡tx = r\cos t, y=rsin⁡ty = r\sin t, use cos⁡2t+sin⁡2t=1\cos^2 t + \sin^2 t = 1 instead: x2+y2=r2x^2 + y^2 = r^2.

Worked example

Eliminate tt: x=3tx = 3t, y=6t−1y = 6t - 1.

t=x3t = \dfrac{x}{3}
Solve the simpler one for t.
y=6⋅x3−1y = 6 \cdot \dfrac{x}{3} - 1
Substitute into y.
y=2x−1y = 2x - 1
Simplify: a line.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: x=t−4x = t - 4, y=t2y = t^2.

t=x+4t = x + 4
Add 4.
y=(x+4)2y = (x + 4)^2
Substitute into y = t². Type y.

Practice ★

  1. x=t+6x = t + 6 and y=t2y = t^2. Write yy in terms of xx.
  2. x=t+8x = t + 8 and y=t2y = t^2. Write yy in terms of xx.
  3. x=t+5x = t + 5 and y=t2y = t^2. Write yy in terms of xx.

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. x=3tx = 3t and y=4t+9y = 4t + 9. Write yy in terms of xx.
  2. x=2tx = 2t and y=2t+3y = 2t + 3. Write yy in terms of xx.
  3. x=6tx = 6t and y=8t+7y = 8t + 7. Write yy in terms of xx.
  1. What curve do x=5cos⁡tx = 5\cos t and y=5sin⁡ty = 5\sin t draw, for 0≤t<2π0 \le t < 2\pi?
    1. A circle of radius 5 centered at the origin
    2. A line
    3. A circle of radius 2525

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

  1. x=3tx = 3t and y=4t+9y = 4t + 9. Write yy in terms of xx.
  2. x=2tx = 2t and y=2t+3y = 2t + 3. Write yy in terms of xx.
  3. x=6tx = 6t and y=8t+7y = 8t + 7. Write yy in terms of xx.

Summary card

Eliminating the parameter

  1. Solve one equation for tt.
  2. Substitute into the other.
  3. With cos⁡t\cos t and sin⁡t\sin t: use cos⁡2t+sin⁡2t=1\cos^2 t + \sin^2 t = 1.

Watch out: solve for tt; do not just replace tt by xx.
