Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

A point moves on x=cos⁡tx = \cos t, y=sin⁡ty = \sin t, starting at (1,0)(1, 0) when t=0t = 0. Where is it at t=π2t = \dfrac{\pi}{2}?

  1. (0,1)(0, 1)
  2. (0,−1)(0, -1)

Key idea

Cosine and sine make points go around.

x=acos⁡tx = a\cos t, y=bsin⁡ty = b\sin t is an ellipse with horizontal half-axis aa and vertical half-axis bb (a circle if a=ba = b), traced counterclockwise from (a,0)(a, 0). With cos⁡(kt)\cos(kt) and sin⁡(kt)\sin(kt), one turn takes t=2πkt = \dfrac{2\pi}{k}.

Worked example

Describe x=4cos⁡tx = 4\cos t, y=2sin⁡ty = 2\sin t.

xx from −4-4 to 44: horizontal half-axis 44
cos t goes from −1 to 1.
yy from −2-2 to 22: vertical half-axis 22
sin t also.
x216+y24=1\dfrac{x^2}{16} + \dfrac{y^2}{4} = 1, an ellipse
cos² + sin² = 1.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: x=5cos⁡(3t)x = 5\cos(3t), y=5sin⁡(3t)y = 5\sin(3t).

A circle of radius 55
Same coefficient on both.
One turn takes t=2π3t = \dfrac{2\pi}{3}
3t reaches 2π at t = 2π/3.

Practice ★

  1. The ellipse x=3cos⁡tx = 3\cos t, y=4sin⁡ty = 4\sin t reaches xx-values from −c-c to cc. What is cc?
  2. The ellipse x=7cos⁡tx = 7\cos t, y=5sin⁡ty = 5\sin t reaches xx-values from −c-c to cc. What is cc?
  3. The ellipse x=2cos⁡tx = 2\cos t, y=4sin⁡ty = 4\sin t reaches xx-values from −c-c to cc. What is cc?

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. A point moves on x=7sin⁡tx = 7\sin t, y=7cos⁡ty = 7\cos t. At t=0t = 0 it is at (0,7)(0, 7). Which way does it go as tt increases?
    1. Clockwise
    2. Counterclockwise
    3. Along a straight line
  1. A point moves on x=8cos⁡(4t)x = 8\cos(4t), y=8sin⁡(4t)y = 8\sin(4t). How long does one full turn take?
  2. A point moves on x=7cos⁡(3t)x = 7\cos(3t), y=7sin⁡(3t)y = 7\sin(3t). How long does one full turn take?
  3. A point moves on x=7cos⁡(2t)x = 7\cos(2t), y=7sin⁡(2t)y = 7\sin(2t). How long does one full turn take?

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

Summary card

Circles and ellipses

  • x=acos⁡tx = a\cos t, y=bsin⁡ty = b\sin t: half-axes aa (horizontal) and bb (vertical).
  • Counterclockwise from (a,0)(a, 0); swapping sin⁡\sin and cos⁡\cos reverses it.
  • cos⁡(kt)\cos(kt), sin⁡(kt)\sin(kt): one turn in 2πk\dfrac{2\pi}{k}.

Watch out: the number with cos⁡\cos in xx is the horizontal half-axis.
