Warm-up

Three quick questions from earlier lessons.

Discover

sin⁡2x\sin 2x repeats twice as fast as sin⁡x\sin x. On [0,2π)[0, 2\pi), how many solutions does sin⁡2x=12\sin 2x = \dfrac{1}{2} have?

  1. Four
  2. Two

Key idea

Solve for the whole angle first, on the stretched interval.

For sin⁡(nx)=c\sin(nx) = c with 0≤x<2π0 \le x < 2\pi: let θ=nx\theta = nx, which runs over [0,2nπ)[0, 2n\pi). Find every θ\theta there (add 2π2\pi again and again), then divide each by nn.

Worked example

Solve cos⁡2x=0\cos 2x = 0 for 0≤x<2π0 \le x < 2\pi.

cos⁡θ=0\cos\theta = 0: θ=π2,3π2,5π2,7π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2}, \dfrac{3\pi}{2}, \dfrac{5\pi}{2}, \dfrac{7\pi}{2}
θ = 2x runs over [0, 4π).
x=π4,3π4,5π4,7π4x = \dfrac{\pi}{4}, \dfrac{3\pi}{4}, \dfrac{5\pi}{4}, \dfrac{7\pi}{4}
Divide each by 2.

Your turn, guided

Your turn: sin⁡2x=1\sin 2x = 1.

θ=π2\theta = \dfrac{\pi}{2} or 5π2\dfrac{5\pi}{2}
θ = 2x in [0, 4π): sin θ = 1 at π/2 and π/2 + 2π.
x=π4x = \dfrac{\pi}{4} or x=5π4x = \dfrac{5\pi}{4}
Divide 5π/2 by 2.

Practice ★

  1. How many solutions does sin⁡(5x)=12\sin(5x) = \dfrac{1}{2} have for 0≤x<2π0 \le x < 2\pi?
  2. How many solutions does sin⁡(4x)=12\sin(4x) = \dfrac{1}{2} have for 0≤x<2π0 \le x < 2\pi?
  3. How many solutions does sin⁡(2x)=12\sin(2x) = \dfrac{1}{2} have for 0≤x<2π0 \le x < 2\pi?

Watch out!

Practice ★★

  1. Solve sin⁡2x=12\sin 2x = \frac{1}{2} for 0≤x<2π0 \le x < 2\pi.
  2. Solve sin⁡2x=32\sin 2x = \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} for 0≤x<2π0 \le x < 2\pi.
  1. Solve cos⁡3x=−1\cos 3x = -1 for 0≤x<2π0 \le x < 2\pi.

Exit ticket

Three questions to check you have got it.

Summary card

Multiple angles

  1. Let θ=nx\theta = nx: it runs over [0,2nπ)[0, 2n\pi).
  2. List every θ\theta there.
  3. Divide each by nn.

Watch out: sin⁡2x\sin 2x has twice as many solutions as sin⁡x\sin x.
