Lesson 1 · Derivatives of parametric curves

Parametric slopes

  • dydx=dy/dtdx/dt\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{dy/dt}{dx/dt}.
  • Horizontal: y′=0y' = 0. Vertical: x′=0x' = 0.

Watch out: yy's rate on top.

Lesson 2 · Second derivatives of parametric curves

Second derivative

d2ydx2=ddt ⁣(dydx)/dxdt\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2} = \dfrac{d}{dt}\!\left(\dfrac{dy}{dx}\right) \Big/ \dfrac{dx}{dt}.

Watch out: the division by dx/dtdx/dt is needed again.

Lesson 5 · Slopes of polar curves

Polar slopes

dydx=r′sin⁡θ+rcos⁡θr′cos⁡θ−rsin⁡θ\dfrac{dy}{dx} = \dfrac{r'\sin\theta + r\cos\theta}{r'\cos\theta - r\sin\theta}.

Watch out: dr/dθdr/d\theta is not the slope.

Lesson 6 · Area in polar coordinates

Polar area

A=12∫αβr2 dθA = \tfrac{1}{2}\displaystyle\int_{\alpha}^{\beta} r^2\,d\theta.

Watch out: the ½ and the square.
