Lesson 2 · Eliminate the parameter

Eliminating the parameter

  1. Solve one equation for tt.
  2. Substitute into the other.
  3. With cos⁡t\cos t and sin⁡t\sin t: use cos⁡2t+sin⁡2t=1\cos^2 t + \sin^2 t = 1.

Watch out: solve for tt; do not just replace tt by xx.

Lesson 3 · Circles and ellipses in parametric form

Circles and ellipses

  • x=acos⁡tx = a\cos t, y=bsin⁡ty = b\sin t: half-axes aa (horizontal) and bb (vertical).
  • Counterclockwise from (a,0)(a, 0); swapping sin⁡\sin and cos⁡\cos reverses it.
  • cos⁡(kt)\cos(kt), sin⁡(kt)\sin(kt): one turn in 2πk\dfrac{2\pi}{k}.

Watch out: the number with cos⁡\cos in xx is the horizontal half-axis.

Lesson 4 · Polar coordinates

Polar coordinates

  • x=rcos⁡θx = r\cos\theta, y=rsin⁡θy = r\sin\theta.
  • r=x2+y2r = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2}, tan⁡θ=yx\tan\theta = \dfrac{y}{x}.

Watch out: choose θ\theta in the quadrant of the point.

Lesson 5 · Polar equations and their graphs

Polar equations

  • Convert with x=rcos⁡θx = r\cos\theta, y=rsin⁡θy = r\sin\theta, r2=x2+y2r^2 = x^2 + y^2.
  • r=ar = a: circle; θ=α\theta = \alpha: line; r=2asin⁡θr = 2a\sin\theta: circle of radius ∣a∣|a| through the origin.

Watch out: in r=2asin⁡θr = 2a\sin\theta, 2a2a is the diameter.

Lesson 6 · Complex numbers in polar form

Polar form of a complex number

  • z=r(cos⁡θ+isin⁡θ)z = r(\cos\theta + i\sin\theta).
  • r=a2+b2r = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}; tan⁡θ=ba\tan\theta = \dfrac{b}{a}, quadrant of (a,b)(a, b).
  • a=rcos⁡θa = r\cos\theta, b=rsin⁡θb = r\sin\theta.

Watch out: plot the point before choosing θ\theta.

Lesson 7 · Products and powers in polar form (De Moivre)

Products and powers in polar form

  • Product: multiply moduli, add arguments.
  • De Moivre: (r cis θ)n=rn cis(nθ)(r\,\mathrm{cis}\,\theta)^n = r^n\,\mathrm{cis}(n\theta).

Watch out: do not raise the real and imaginary parts separately.
